Rebel = Anti-patriotic
When my alma-mater changed it's mascot from the Redskins to the Redhawks I thought that was pretty stupid. Sure the term "redskins" might be offensive but we were proud to be associated with the name, not ashamed and certainly not trying to insult.
Plus I just generally dislike political correctness.
But in retrospect it was the right thing to do. I still think Redhawk was a lousy replacement but that's an entirely different discussion.
Now we have the Maryville Rebels trying to eliminate the rebel flag from their school. Sounds like a good idea to me. While you're at it, why don't you show some pro-USA spirit and change your team name in general. Why are you celebrating a traitorous rebellion that was put down over a century ago?

This is a fine concept if you apply it equally. A lot of black folks are sure to be offended by Robert Byrd. Because they are offended should we scrape his name off all the buildings they engraved it on in Virginia. How about the highways with his name on them. If this is about removing offensiveness then we should remove all names that refer to groups or individuals. Regardless of who they are. We should remove the Lincoln memorial because their are a lot of folks that are offended by Lincoln. We should remove Ronald Reagans name from the airport in DC. We should remove all the Martin Luther King signs. It appears that some folks think that only folks they approve of should be celebrated. Where do you hook up the concept of freedom to this? And I am pretty sure, you can always go check this, that the word rebel was in existence before the civil war. In fact it is used all the time to describe folks. James Dean was a rebel, according to the media. A gay rebel, but still the title was attached. Were they calling him a racist. No. If you don't agree with political correctness then try being 100% on it. Apply which terms to folks you wish but don't try and take others 'rights' to apply the terms they wish. Pro USA spirit is variable, obviously. If you believe in diversity like you say, then what I have said is true. The word 'Diversity' actually has a meaning, and is not just a catch phrase you get to use for aquiring votes. The words Intellectual Integrity come to mind for me. The 'N' word kind of proves the caveats that you guys like to stick on political correctness. Use of the N word is bad, unless you are a black guy or gal trying to sell rap CD's to white kids on MTV. If these same white kids that bought these CDs use the word they are labeled racist while the black kids are not. ?. Double standards are no good. If you think this is culturally OK then you have to go with the "Robert E. Lee" buildings as well. That is cultural, too. A monument of Jefferson Davis doesn't send anyone into depression and you know it. But I know you will probably disagree with me so I have a suggestion for the Maryville school name. How about 'The Maryville Moonbats'.

Someone has been boning up on their Limbaugh dittos! Hate speech is quite different than diversity and you should know that. Anything else is plain old trolling.
The "rebel" flag happened to be one of hundreds of banners the Confederates fought under. There was no single flag. That flag is popular for one and only one reason, it was adopted by the KKK as their banner. Flying the KKK banner is hateful and racist.
