Pope Benedict XVI
I'm not Catholic and the Pope's position on the issues isn't a concern but this article about the guy was posted yesterday by a writer at The New Republic. Lucky guess.

You are a genius aren't you?
Your quote:
"and the Pope's position on the issues isn't a concern"

Listen, I'm not a Catholic either, but to say that the Pope's position are of no concern?? You think big don't you Mr. International Man. That was why a lot of people had trouble with Kennedy when he was president. But that is just history. Don't concern yourself with that either. Man, I'm at a loss for words. You don't even get the most basic stuff. You evidently have no idea how many Catholics there are worldwide or jumping the border for that matter. I have always thought of them more like a cult. Jesus told me I could talk directly to God. He gave an example of how to say the Lord's prayer. I've never understood how the rosary is supposed to work or why I would pray to Mary who was human with two human parents. God favored her but she was not divine, however; I am not condemning anything. There will be a lot of Catholics in heaven. It's about faith in God and the miracle of Christ.

Run on over here if you don't think the Pope's positions on issues is a concern. http://beta.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20050419/pl_afp/vaticanpopeus

Sorry, still not concerned. The Pope and Catholics in general are entitled to their opinions and even express them politically. As long as they don't try to legislate them then I'm not the least bit concerned.

The guy looks like a reject from the Addams Family.
He was a Nazi Youth and soldier.
He was also head of the Roman Catholic Inquisition Board or whatever they call it nowadays.
Me, I don't care, he's old and won't last long regardless of his views about the church.
Where I grew up if you were Soutehrn Baptist or another equally rabid denomination and were "Raised Right", you knew that all Cathlicks were gone straight to Hell 'cause they were evil idolaters.

Actually I think he looks pretty good and energetic for being 78 years old. If my fatass doesn't die of a heart attack long before then I hope I look that good.
This is some serious old-school anti-catholic hatred I'm seeing fellas. I'm honestly disappointed.

I hope you are addressing gonzone. I said nothing anti-catholic. I said that I don't understand why they do what they do, and they do fit the description of a cult.
From Merriam Webster. Check out number five.
Main Entry: cult
Pronunciation: 'k<
Function: noun
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: French & Latin; French culte, from Latin cultus care, adoration, from colere to cultivate -- more at WHEEL
1 : formal religious veneration : WORSHIP
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator
5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion
It seems to me like the Catholics have a great devotion to the Pope (a person). Just because people disagree doesn't make them anti-anything. I also stressed that there would be a lot of Catholics in heaven. I wasn't bashing anybody. You just had the typical knee-jerk reaction most liberals have to dissent. I used to go to Baptist churches but I did not give devotion to the pastor.

Yes, that was more directed at Gonzone than you but your "cult" comment was in my mind. That's just something I've heard from some real anti-Catholic bigots before.

My apologies if I seemed anti-Catholic.
I am not.
I should been more careful with my words.
Some of my best friends and best neighbors are Catholic.
I disagree with some of the official postiions of the Catholic churtch but I also strongly agree wtih many other positions.
I was merely repreating many of the sentiments that are prevalent in the area.
Speaking of that, did ya' catch the Newport church sign on the news?
Something like "No Hope for the Hell Bound Pope." Fundies are such sick fuc*s and haters.

Yea. Look at the last letter to the editor in today's knoxnews. Very good letter on the subject.

As someone who was raised Catholic but no longer adheres to their beliefs, I can answer some of those concerns from my perspective.
Whenever I feel the need to say a prayer, it is always the Hail Mary. I figure that she was Jesus's mother, and every good Jewish boy listens to his mother.
I'm no fan of the new or old Pope. I see them as terrified little men who promote the idea that sex is dirty and a sin for women and they deserve to suffer from aids, death in childbirth, the agony of seeing their children die often and young.
Glad I got that out of my system! Thanks, I feel better now.

Every good jewish boy listens to his mother???? Wow, that is so deep. Right in line with Socrates and Plato. Every good jewish boy will listen to his aunts and uncles as well. What does that have to do with anything?
Terrified little men???? Wow, your intellect has no bounds. If they are terrified it is because people write nonsense such as "sex is dirty and a sin for women and they deserve to suffer from aids, death in childbirth, the agony of seeing their children die often and young." But I am glad you got it off your chest. You hold on to those thoughts for too long and you will explode.
